For Work

Any condition that impairs executive functioning can present challenges at work, from difficulty organising and prioritising to issues with motivation, boredom and environmental distractions. But ADHD strengths like innovation, energy, hyperfocus and compassion can also be of huge value to employers and clients! In the UK you are entitled to "reasonable adjustments" in the workplace to support you with challenges, and you're often eligible for funding to help you tackle them. Below are some useful links for both employed and self-employed adults.

Access to Work

Access to Work is a government scheme that offers financial support to help you stay in work, whether you're employed or self-employed. It can be used to pay for or contribute towards assistive software, administration assistance, and ADHD coaching (like mine)! You do not need a formal diagnosis to apply for it. The application process has a few steps, which can make it daunting for those of us with ADHD, but the following links include support that might help take the edge off...

This short free course by Leanne Maskell of ADHD Works guides you through the application process. It lists everything you need to prepare in advance, and includes a pausable video that you can apply alongside, to keep you on track.

Link to the advocacy service provided by this versatile ADHD support company. They can support you with communicating your needs during the application process.

This service from Disability Arts Online supports those working in the arts and culture sector applying for Access to Work. Their services include one-to-one support from dedicated staff (you can apply for this via this form - there is currently a waiting list) and a downloadable guide in various accessible formats.

Reasonable Adjustments

What counts as a "reasonable adjustment" can vary from workplace to workplace, and what helps will be different for every employee. You might not instantly know what adjustments you require or are entitled to for your position. For this reason, if you disclose your ADHD to an employer (which is your choice), it helps to have clear, productive and ongoing conversations with someone who lets you feel comfortable opening up. 

This is charity ADHD UK's guide to reasonable adjustments, including a link to receive a downloadable Welfare Pack which you can share with your employer to better structure conversations about your ADHD. The page also includes a few examples (of many!) of potential adjustments that can be made.
